Through the Looking Glass: Discovering Your Authentic Style with Mood Boards

Step through the looking glass and enter a world where imagination and authenticity intertwine. Peer into the depths of your own reflection as you curate a mood board that unveils the truest essence of your style, guiding you towards a sartorial journey of self-discovery.

Developing a personal sense of style and fashion is an exciting journey of self-expression. One effective tool to help you refine your style and explore your unique aesthetic is a personal mood board. A mood board allows you to gather and curate visual elements that inspire you, such as colour swatches, fabric patterns, magazine clippings, and more. Here we will guide you through the process of creating a personal mood board, step by step, so you can unleash your creativity and define your own fashion narrative. You can do a physical mood board such as a cork board and use push pins to add swatches, images, fabrics, etc. or sites such as Pinterest. I prefer a physical board, then I can add things like fabrics, trim and paint swatches, and be able to see it all laid out together.

1: Gather Your Inspirations

Begin by collecting items that resonate with your personal style. Look for inspiration in various sources such as magazines, Pinterest, art, and even everyday life. Pay attention to colors, textures, patterns, and silhouettes that catch your eye. These inspirations will form the foundation of your mood board.

 2: Explore Colour Palettes

Colours play an important role in defining your style. Start by collecting swatches that speak to you. You can obtain swatches from paint stores, fabric stores, or even by cutting out images from magazines. Organize your swatches by creating colour themes or palettes that reflect the moods and emotions you want to convey through your fashion choices.

3: Collect Fabric and Pattern Samples

Fabrics and patterns have a significant impact on fashion. Visit fabric stores or gather fabric swatches online to explore different textures, prints, and weaves. Include fabric samples that align with your style preferences, whether it's delicate lace, bold animal prints, or classic plaid. Additionally, gather pattern samples, such as floral motifs or geometric designs, that resonate with your fashion vision.

4: Magazine Clippings and Pinterest Inspiration

Magazines and Pinterest are treasure troves of fashion inspiration. Flip through fashion magazines and cut out images that captivate you. Pin them to your mood board or scan and print them for digital boards. Similarly, create a dedicated Pinterest board where you can save fashion looks, runway images, and style tips that resonate with your aesthetic. Be open to a wide range of styles to explore and refine your own unique taste.

5: Incorporate Artistic Inspiration

Art can provide a rich source of inspiration for fashion. Consider including images of paintings, illustrations, or sculptures that evoke a certain mood or aesthetic that resonates with you. Artistic influences can help you infuse your personal style with a touch of creativity and individuality.

And just to note-a mood board shouldn't be all fashion or magazine editorial photos...it's great to pull inspiration from anything and everything that inspires you, be it art, movies, books, nature, you name it! The possibilities are endless.

Have fun and keep creating!
